Foundation model

A general model others build products on.

A foundation model is trained broadly rather than for one task, then adapted — by prompting, retrieval, fine-tuning or tools — into many different products.

The economics concentrate: very few organisations can fund frontier pre-training, and a large ecosystem builds on top of what they release.

It is the layer where capability, safety policy and pricing are all set for everyone downstream.
