Meta has rolled out a driving detection feature for its Meta Display frames, administered via the companion Meta AI smartphone application. When toggled on, onboard motion sensors detect vehicular transit and automatically suppress the glasses' micro-display, shifting the device entirely into an audio-only mode until travel concludes.

The software override highlights the ongoing friction between visual computing and real-world safety. While Meta’s display-equipped Ray-Ban models offer features such as live text translation and visual captioning directly in the user's field of view, unregulated optics in transit environments present liability and compliance risks. Forcing the display dark while keeping microphones and open-ear speakers active allows the device to function as a hands-free voice terminal without obstructing a driver's line of sight.
